San Juan de Dios
San Juan de Dios, Juan Ciudad Duarte (Montemayor, Portugal 1495-Granada 1550), se instaló en Granada en 1538 cuando un año después, un sermón de San Juan de Ávila le llevó a una profunda conversión. Tomado por loco por su apasionada actitud, lo ingresaron en el Hospital Real. Allí conoció el duro trato a los enfermos, propio de la época, que le movió a fundar un hospital. Con limosnas conseguidas con su lema "hermanos, haceos bien a vosotros mismos" lo hizo realidad. El trato amoroso a todos los enfermos en los que él veía a Jesucristo fue el germen de la orden Hospitalaria, cuyos hospitales se reparten hoy por todo el mundo.
San Juan de Dios, Juan Ciudad Duarte (Montemayor, Portugal 1495-Granada 1550), settled in Granada in 1538. A year later a sermon by San Juan de Ávila drove him to change his life radically. Called a madman for his zealous behaviour, he was interned in Granada's Royal Hospital. There, he gained first hand knowledge of the rough treatment of patients, a practice which was common at the time, and decided to commission the construction of a hospital himself. With the donations which he attained with his maxim "brothers, look after yourselves", he was able to fulfil his aim and the kind treatment which he gave the patients, in whom he saw the image of Christ, was the basis for the creation of the Order of the Hospitallers, whose hospitals can now be found all over the world.
