María Coronel era la viuda de Juan de la Cerda, que había sido decapitado por conspiración, cuando Pedro I se enamoró de ella. Huyendo de éste, se refugió en el convento de Santa Clara y al ser descubierta se arrojó aceite hirviendo en la cara. Arrepentido, el rey le devolvió el solar que había confiscado a su marido, donde fundó el convento de Santa Inés. En el coro de este convento, todavía se venera su cuerpo incorrupto.
María Coronel was the widow of Juan de la Cerda, who had been beheaded for conspiracy when King Pedro I fell in love with her. Fleeing from Pedro I, she took refuge in the convent of Santa Clara and when she was discovered there, she threw boiling oil on her face. In an act of repentance, the king returned the land he had confiscated from her husband, where she later founded the convent of Santa Inés. Her remains lay to rest in the convent's choir.
