Eugenia de Montijo
Eugenia de Montijo (Granada 1826-Madrid 1920) se trasladó joven a París, tras la muerte de su padre. En 1851 conoció a Napoleón III, emperador de Francia. Se casaron en 1853, justificando Napoleón su matrimonio en el Senado francés como una ruptura con la tradición de los matrimonios dinásticos. Fue regente de Francia en tres ocasiones, participando activamente en la política del imperio. Tras la caída de Napoleón III en 1870, se exilió en Inglaterra, desde donde visitó en numerosas ocasiones España.
Eugenia de Montijo (Granada 1826-Madrid 1920). After the death of her father, she went to live in Paris at a very young age. In 1851 she met Napoleon III, Emperor of France, whom she married in 1853. In a speech to the Senate, Napoleon justified his marriage by saying that he wished to break with the tradition of dynastic marriages. She acted as Regent of France on three occasions, and had an active role in the political life of the empire. After Napoleon III fell in 1870, she went into exile in England from where she visited Spain on numerous occasions.
